Within the world of packaging metals, ETP and TFS are often mentioned side by side.

Both materials are widely used in the packaging industry, but they differ in terms of properties, coatings and processing capabilities. The right choice depends on your product, manufacturing process, coating requirements and end application.

What is ETP?

ETP stands for Electrolytic Tinplate. It is cold-rolled steel coated with a thin layer of tin on both sides. This tin coating provides a bright metallic finish, good corrosion resistance, strong barrier properties, excellent printability and good welding and soldering characteristics. ETP is widely used in packaging applications where protection, appearance and processability are equally important.

The material is particularly attractive when weldability and printability are key requirements.

What is TFS?

TFS stands for Tin Free Steel. Rather than being coated with tin, the steel is coated with chromium and chromium oxide. The material has a matte blue-grey appearance and is known for excellent lacquer adhesion, high resistance to sulphide staining and strong performance at elevated temperatures.

TFS is generally more cost-effective than ETP but cannot be electrically welded. For this reason, TFS is primarily used in applications where bonding, coating or drawing processes are preferred.

  • Shallow-drawn cans
  • Screw caps

The main differences between ETP and TFS

The primary difference lies in the coating and the processing method.

ETP features a tin coating and is suitable for applications where corrosion resistance, printability and weldability are important. TFS is coated with chromium and chromium oxide and is typically selected for applications where lacquer adhesion, bonding performance and resistance to higher temperatures are key requirements.

When Should You Choose ETP?
ETP is often the right choice when you require:

  • Applications in food, beverage, aerosol or paint packaging

For food and beverage packaging, ETP can be an excellent solution when supplied according to the correct specifications and application requirements.

When Should You Choose TFS?
TFS is worth considering when you require:

  • Excellent lacquer adhesion
  • Reliable performance at elevated temperatures
  • Resistance to sulphide staining
  • Cost-efficient processing
  • Applications where bonding is preferred over welding

For lids, can ends and screw caps, TFS can be an excellent choice.
