Closed-loop recycling with foundry MGG

Processing aluminium waste into new raw material

MGG, one of Europe's largest aluminium sand foundries, processes large quantities of aluminium every year for high-quality and complex castings that are used in the medical, energy and automotive sectors, among others.

The production process generates a considerable amount of aluminium waste in the form of chips and slag, also known as residual flows. Roba Metals responsibly recycles these residual flows into aluminium block material, resulting in raw material that can be used immediately by MGG.

Our collaboration with MGG

As part of a closed loop, MGG collects waste streams in specially designated containers. Once these are full, Roba Recycling replaces them with empty containers on site. Collected waste streams are immediately remelted in our own smelters into new aluminium block material tailored to MGG's specifications. The local partnership with MGG offers clear advantages: communication is direct and efficient, allowing for quick adjustments to changing needs. There is also room for optimisation: both parties are actively working to improve efficiency within MGG's waste streams.

Closed-loop recycling: responsible and economically attractive

By recycling locally, we keep our ecological footprint low. Long transport distances are avoided, aluminium waste streams remain within the Netherlands (or the EU) and the aluminium cycle remains transparent and manageable.

This case study shows how closed-loop recycling is not only ecologically responsible, but also operationally efficient and economically attractive, as long as the right partnerships are established. Closed-loop recycling offers concrete benefits for aluminium processors who want to make their processes more sustainable and optimise them.

The collaboration between Roba and MGG shows how various aluminium waste streams do not have to mean the end of the chain, but rather the beginning of a circular approach.

Gabor Kovacs – MGG

‘Together, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the efficiency of the recycling process for our material flows. It is great that Roba actively contributes ideas and can immediately apply solutions in practice.’
